UP MANILA DEVSTUD WEEK 2022 PRESS RELEASE

The UP Manila Development Studies Society presents DevStud Week ‘22 with the theme “CROSSCURRENTS: Intensifying the People-Oriented and Praxis-Based Development Education, Research, and Advocacy” — a five-day event from November 21-25 that will feature back-to-back public fora, team-building activities, and cultural presentations. 

The program aligns the commemoration of its 40th founding anniversary in solidarity with the people’s development agenda through the following lineup of activities: 

November 21 (Monday)

[9:00 AM – 12:00 PM]  Book launch of Nuclear-Free Nation: The Power of the People VS. Nuclear Power in the Philippines featuring Prof. Roland G. Simbulan 

Edited and co-authored by one of the esteemed professors of the Department of Social Sciences and the Development Studies Program in UP Manila, Professor Roland G. Simbulan’s Nuclear-Free Nation: The Power of the People VS. Nuclear Power in the Philippines recognizes the people-led resistance against nuclear power plants.. 

[1:00 PM – 3:00 PM] Brown Bag Session: Governmentality in the Context of a Japanese-funded Farm-to-Market Road in Agdangan, Quezon featuring Dr. Ma. Josephine Therese Emily G. Teves

Currently a UP Manila Development Studies professor, Dr. Ma. Josephine Therese Emily G. Teves will extensively discuss her critical analysis of the management process for a Japanese-funded Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) in Agdangan Quezon Province, Philippines, within the Foucaldian context of governmentality.

November 22 (Tuesday) 

[9:30 AM – 11:30 AM]  KRITIKA: Pagsusuri sa Kawalan ng Seguridad sa Pagkain, Huwad na Reporma sa Lupa at mga Kontra-Magsasakang Polisiya 

Co-organized with NNARA-Youth UP Manila, this forum on food sovereignty and the Genuine Agrarian Reform Bill (GARB) will be led by Ka Daning Ramos of Kilusang Mambubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP).

[1:00 PM – 4:00 PM] ANTIPARA 2022: Pananaliksik sa Lente ng Masa  

This research colloquium will serve as a venue for selected 4th year Development Studies students to not only present their research proposals, but to also seek the expert advice of three panelists from the UP Manila Development Studies Program faculty roster. 

November 23 (Wednesday)

[9:00 AM – 11:30 AM] Dr. Edberto Malvar Villegas Commemorative Lectures: Philippine Labor Situationer

The third installment in the annual Dr. Edberto Malvar Villegas Commemorative Lectures, a three-part discussion on the current institutional frameworks and practices for labor rights will be led by Ms. Kamille Deligente, Deputy Director of the Center for Trade Union and Human Rights (CTUHR); Ms. Anna Patricia Santos, Executive Director of the Crispin B. Beltran Resource Center, and Mr. Joshua Marcial, Campaign and Advocacy Officer of the Ecumenical Institute for Labor Education and Research. 

[1:00 PM – 4;00 PM] KINAADMAN: Tagisan ng Talas at Talino

The first face-to-face Palarong DevStud in three years, KINAADMAN is a test of grit, quick wit, and teamwork through interbatch team-building activities. 

November 24 (Thursday)

[9:00 AM – 12:00 PM] BAHAGINAN 2022: Development Studies Career Orientation

Bahaginan seeks to establish linkages between the current students of the degree program and its alumni through a dynamic exchange of experiences and insights about development praxis and the development sector.

November 25 (Friday)

[9:30 AM – 11:30 AM] Ilaban Nagbannugan (Ilaban ang Pinagpaguran): The Peasant Struggle for Land in Cagayan Valley

The Alternative Classroom Learning Experience (ACLE), Ilaban Nagbannugan, will delve on the collective struggle for land rights by the tillers drawn from the community organizing experience of the Taripnong Cagayan Valley (Association of Cagayan Valley Advocates).

[1:00 PM – 4:00 PM] CineUSWAG & DevSong: Kumpas ng Agos 

This year’s Development Praxis documentary fest provides glimpses of the rural political economy of municipalities of Magallanes, Naic, Ternate and Maragondon in the province of Cavite. Showcasing what Critical Development Studies stands for in terms of pedagogy and politics, the five-day commemorative event will be capped with a cultural performance by selected Development Studies students.
