“If it is just us, it seems like an awful waste of space.” – Carl Sagan
Since time immemorial, humanity has always looked up to the stars and wondered if there is someone like us out there. The UP Astronomical Society invites you to its celebration of the 30th National Astronomy Week this February 12-18, where together we can explore the possibilities of extraterrestrial life and ponder our place in the universe.
With the theme, “Astrobiology: Our Place in The Universe,” NAW aims to explore the development of life in the universe, and how we might fit in it. UP AstroSoc will hold activities, contests, quizzes, and more to promote and broaden interest in astronomy during the event.
At NAW, there’s something for everyone. If you’re a high school student, you along with a team of three and a coach can join Big Bang, the biggest astronomy quiz show in the country that will test your knowledge on everything astronomy and space related. Big Bang will, for the first time since the pandemic, be held on-site at the University of the Philippines Diliman, on February 18, 2022. Aside from medals and certificates, the first-place team shall also win a Celestron Powerseeker 70AZ telescope!
High school students can also join Take Off, a water-rocket-making competition. Form a team of two along with a coach to challenge your design, engineering, and rocket science skills! The event will be held on-site on February 18, at the University of the Philippines Diliman.
Meanwhile, if you’re not a high school student but you still want to answer Astro-related trivia, then watch out for Orionids. Orionids is an online trivia quiz game on UP AstroSoc’s Facebook page that will be open to the general public, and who knows — there might be special prizes for you!
If you are more interested in sights and photos, look no further than Star Trails: an astrophotography contest. Show us your astrophotography skills and take breathtaking photos of the sky and the cosmos. Submissions are open until February 18.
Finally, for teachers and educators, we present Parallax: a workshop on astronomy education and science communication. Here, you can learn from experts from the field about how to promote astronomy to students and the general public. The seminar will be on February 11, from 1:30 to 4:30 PM.
You may register for the event through this link.
