TRAINING PROGRAM FOR OLDER WORKERS GETS HOUSE OK

The House Committee on Labor and Employment chaired by 1-PACMAN Partylist Representative Eric Pineda consolidated and approved House Bills 1863, 1892, 4333 and 8349, which seek to create a job training program for mature or older workers.

“We always talk about supporting programs for the youth and women, so I think it’s about time that we institutionalize a training program for the mature or older workers,” Camarines Sur 2nd District Representative LRay Villafuerte Jr. said.

“The intention of this measure is to put this sector as part of the priority.”

“Marami naman programa ang gobyerno, TESDA, DOLE and other training, I think the intention of this measure is to put this sector as part of the priority,” added Villafuerte, author of HB 8349.

“Older workers need additional training so they can adapt to the changing job market.”

Meanwhile, Manila 3rd District Rep. John Marvin Nieto, in his opening statement said, “Nararapat lang po na mabigyan ang mga older workers natin ng mga karagdagang training upang hindi po sila mahirapan makasabay sa nababagong job market dito sa ating bansa.”

Nieto is the author of HB 4333.

The panel also tackled HB 631, authored by Deputy Speaker Loren Legarda, which seeks to amend RA 8759 or the “Public Employment Service Office (PESO) Act of 1999” by including and promoting entrepreneurship in the law.

Lastly, the panel initially deliberated on the substitute bill to HBs 1670, 1904 and 5471, which proposes the adoption of a flexible work arrangement that would amend Presidential Decree 442 or the “Labor Code of the Philippines.”
