The Surigao City government joined the nation in commemorating the 128th Anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal’s Martyrdom with the theme “Rizal sa Bagong Pilipinas: Buhay at Aral, Aming Nilalandas.”
The program featured a wreath-laying ceremony, a gun salute, and messages that emphasized Rizal’s enduring impact.
Mayor Paul Dumlao urged Surigaonons to draw inspiration from Rizal’s enduring legacy.
“His life is more than just a chapter in history — it’s a rallying call to every Filipino.”
“Rizal challenged us to think, to question, and to do something. His life is more than just a chapter in history — it’s a rallying call to every Filipino, especially every Surigaonon, to strive for progress and uphold respect for the future,” Dumlao said.
The mayor called on everyone to live by Rizal’s principles, saying, “By working together, we can create a Surigao where everyone, not just a select few, can benefit from growth, where every family can prosper, and where every Surigaonon has the opportunity to dream and succeed. Let’s create a city where everyone is included and where Rizal’s principles are not only upheld but also lived on a daily basis.”
He also called for a higher standard of leadership, one that uplifts rather than controls.
“As Surigaonons, let us not allow leaders who seek to control us, silence us, or strip us of our dignity.”
“As Surigaonons, let us not allow leaders who seek to control us, silence us, or strip us of our dignity. Leadership is not about control; it’s about empowerment. True leadership inspires, uplifts, and transforms communities by focusing on the people’s needs and aspirations,” Dumlao stressed.
Also present during the ceremony are City Vice Mayor Alfonso S. Casurra, Provincial Administrator Atty. Rise Faith Recabo, City Councilor Baltazar Abian, City Councilor Karl Duane Casurra, City Councilor Joseph Joey Yuipco, City Councilor Noel Christian Catre Jr., and City Councilor Joshua Emilio Gel.
