SOUP: HUGS IN A BOWL

When I’m feeling down or under the weather, I like to look for warm things. Warm things bring me comfort. Some say this is because the cold is 20 times deadlier than heat which makes our brain prefer the warm temperatures to cold weather. Some say that warmth just feels more pleasant. Like a hug, or being bundled by a blanket when the weather is too cold.

As we inch closer to the rainy season, or as stressful things pile up, we might feel a stronger urge or longing for these warm things, so I will share my favorite: soup. I’m a firm believer that there’s a soup for every occasion. I prefer really spicy ramen when I’m angry or frustrated (or when I’m watching Koreanovelas!). I prefer clear, light soup when I’m feeling really down or tired. I like thick, creamy soup when I’m feeling happy or fancy (because it’s perfect with steak!). Even Koreans have soup instead of cakes for their birthdays!

With this, let me share my favorite types of soup!

PUMPKIN SOUP

Pumpkin soup is really easy to make. The recipe is pretty straightforward. Depending on your preferences, you can add in more cream to make it richer and smoother. Rule of thumb is to make sure you taste what you have as you go, so you get the right flavor. If you have the time, take note of your measurements so you can refer to your own recipe when you make it again. I love pumpkin soup by itself but it’s really great with fried or grilled food. It’s not too light and not too heavy. Perfect for a celebration!

KOREAN RAMYEON

This is my favorite ramyeon or ramen. When I don’t feel like cooking or when I feel stressed or frustrated, this is my go-to meal. It’s spicy enough for me to be able to feel that heat and release that pent-up energy. It’s also really filling (and maybe I just really like food a lot. Hahaha!). I know some people hesitate eating instant ramen, but there are a lot of things you can do to make it healthier. If you’re feeling creative or playful, there are also interesting recipes to try! Just don’t forget to drink a lot of water if you’re eating noodles (instant or not!).

CHICKEN ASPARAGUS SOUP

This is my ultimate favorite soup. Asparagus has a very distinct flavor and this soup has very simple ingredients. The core ingredients are: chicken, onion, and asparagus. You can season it with salt and pepper, or use broth or sauces to have more layers of flavor but I just love this dish as simple as it can be. It’s light and it really feels like a hug after a very tiring day, or when I’m feeling sick and I don’t want anything heavy.

Of course, you can test other recipes or make your own based on these few. This is about making you feel good and making you feel better. As long as you keep that in mind, the possibilities are endless.
