The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) concluded its first-ever sports event as it awarded the two champions: the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) for men’s basketball and the Bureau of Fire Protection for women’s volleyball.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes thanked the teams from the 17 Metro Manila local government units and 13 national government agencies for showcasing their abilities, talents, and skills in the inaugural sports event organized by the agency.

The MMDA chief awarded cash prizes and trophies to the basketball game winners. AFP was named big winner and took home P300,000; Office of the President (OP) as first runner-up bagged P200,000; and Parañaque City, the second runner-up, received P100,000.
AFP’s Jess Mar Villahermosa was declared the Most Valuable Player (MVP) and was awarded P20,000 and a trophy. He was also named the Finals MVP. Winston Sergio was declared the best coach.
Included in the Mythical 5 are Villahermosa, AFP; Justin Ramilo, OP; Vinny Dale Begaso, AFP; Hanz Quirido, Parañaque City; and Rocky Antonares, OP.
For the volleyball game, BFP was named big winner and took home P200,000; Makati City as first runner-up and bagged 100,000; and Manila City, second runner-up, received P50,000.
BFP’s Kristel Ongyot was named season’s MVP, and received P20,000; Dess Mae Puyo was declared finals MVP; and Gilbert Domingo was declared best coach.
Included in the Mythical 6 are Jusabelle Brillo, BFP, as best setter; Jonafel Dumalagan, Makati, as best digger; Johanna Sanchez, BFP, as best attacker; Pinkee Fajardo, Makati, as best receiver; Ongyot, BFP, as best server; and Angelica Gacutan, Manila, as best blocker.
MMDA Deputy Chairman Usec. Frisco San Juan Jr., MMDA Assistant General Manager for Operations Asec. David Angelo Vargas, MMDA Cup tournament director Pido Jarencio joined Artes in awarding the winners.
Joyful with the positive turnout of the MMDA Cup, Artes said they are in talks with Philippine Sports Commission Chairman Richard Bachmann for the next season of the sports event.
“We plan to add more sports activities such as badminton, darts, and billiards, among others, for the next sports tournament that we will organize next year.”

The MMDA Cup 2024 was launched in May with the goal of promoting friendship and camaraderie among government employees while participating in basketball and volleyball games.
The MMDA Cup 2024 is conducted in partnership with PhilHealth Insurance Corporation, Joyride Philippines, and San Miguel Corporation and is co-presented by the International Solid Waste Integrated Management Specialist, Inc. (ISWIMS) and MoneyMax Enterprises.
The games are also sponsored by Philippine Ecology Systems Corp.
