The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), together with the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) and Intramuros Administration (IA), conducted clearing operations of dangling wires in Intramuros, Manila to beautify the area and remove eyesores which can also result in accidents.
MMDA Acting Chairman Atty. Don Artes, MMDA Deputy Chairman Undersecretary Frisco San Juan Jr., Intramuros Administrator Atty. Joan Padilla, and Meralco Foreign Attachment Management Operations and Control Officer Armando Torres led the clearing operations along General Luna Street corner Sta. Potenciana Street.
According to Artes, the removal of dangling wires is a preventive measure to avoid these cables and overloaded poles from causing grave and serious threats to the public and the motorists.
Prior to the cleanup, the MMDA chief said that Meralco has informed various telecommunications companies and internet service providers that they will remove unauthorized cables.
“The project ‘Cleantramuros’ of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos which aims to bring back the beauty and glory of Intramuros and to make it the premier attraction here in Metro Manila.”
“The MMDA is here to assist in the project ‘Cleantramuros’ of First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos which aims to bring back the beauty and glory of Intramuros and to make it the premier attraction here in Metro Manila,” he added.
“The clearing of dangling wires is just the start of the IA’s plans and actions to restore the beauty and significant history of the Walled City of Manila.”
“Intramuros has entered the tentative list of United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) World Heritage Sites and the clearing of dangling wires is just the start of the IA’s plans and actions to restore the beauty and significant history of the Walled City of Manila,” Padilla stated.
She said that IA will continue to strictly implement their rules and regulations on the installation of cables and wires within their jurisdiction.
For his part, Torres assured that Meralco will not cut lines without prior advice and the activity will be done in coordination with telco providers.
The common sight of dangling wires, overloaded poles, and jumbled placement of wires in Metro Manila, which pose a grave and serious threat to the lives and limbs of the public, prompted the Metro Manila Mayors to approve the MMDA Resolution 24-16 Series of 2024 last June which regulates and monitors the construction, installation, and maintenance of distribution lines and aims to ensure the integrity of facilities and address public safety by eliminating potential hazards caused by dangling wires.
