Let the leaders on the ground––local government unit (LGU) chiefs––determine their quarantine status.
“LGU executives are in the best position to assess the situation on the ground and to decide on how to implement whatever measures they believe are necessary to contain the virus in their localities,” said Deputy Speaker Benny Abante Jr.
Metro Manila remains in MECQ until September 15 after the national government backtracked on its decision to shift the quarantine status to GCQ.
The House leader on Wednesday suggested that the national government “give more autonomy to LGUs in the battle against COVID since they are at the frontlines of this war.”
“The government itself says that the pandemic response should be LGU-led and national government-enabled. If that is the case, let our LGUs take the lead and ibigay na lang ng national government ang suporta na kailangan nila.”
The lawmaker said that governors in the province and the mayors of large chartered cities should be given the power to decide the status of their areas of responsibility.
Metro Manila mayors, on the other hand, should be allowed to work together and decide for themselves the uniform measures to be implemented in NCR.
“The NCR mayors should not just be consulted, sila na dapat magdesisyon,” stressed the solon.
The lawmaker said that governors in the province and the mayors of large chartered cities should be given the power to decide the status of their areas of responsibility.
“It should be the other way around. Pwede magbigay ng input ang national government at experts nito, but since our mayors will be tasked to implement these recommendations, they should have the final say,” explained the representative from Manila.
