HOUSE LOOKS INTO PH CINEMA INDUSTRY PLIGHT

The House Special Committee on Creative Industry and Performing Arts chaired by Pangasinan 4th District Representative Christopher De Venecia held its initial deliberation on House Resolution No. 451, authored by Deputy Speaker Camille Villar.

The Resolution assesses the plight of Philippine Cinema in order to promote more film productions to generate employment, reviving its renaissance and golden era, as well as feasibly maximizing efforts to secure the country’s first nomination or a win in the most prestigious Oscar Awards for Best International Feature Film, formerly known as Best Foreign Language Film.

De Venecia said the hearing was timely since the 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards, the most prestigious awards in the world, would be held the following day.

“We’re fortunate that one Filipina, the great Dolly de Leon, was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in the Triangle of Sadness.”

“We’re fortunate that one Filipina, the great Dolly de Leon, was nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her performance in the Triangle of Sadness,” the veteran legislator noted.

Meanwhile, Villar said Philippine films are winning recognition in prestigious film festivals in Cannes, Venice and other cinema expositions abroad.

“Winning the most prestigious Oscar Award for Best International Feature Film would mean more employment opportunities for the entire local industry.”

The veteran legislator stressed winning the most prestigious Oscar Award for Best International Feature Film would mean more employment opportunities for the entire local industry, from directors to cinematographers, and from editors to sound technicians, as well as musicians, bit players, extras and those in the periphery work of the arts and cinema.

“I believe it is time we give to those working in the industry the worthy attention that they deserve,” the seasoned lawmaker said.

Marikina 2nd District Representative Stella Luz Quimbo suggested that since the panel is literally at the starting point, meaning it is still beginning to define the boundaries of the industry, then the Department of Trade and Industry and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) should come up with an accounting framework to know the total spending of the industry, as well as the sources and uses of its funds.
