GLOBAL CITIZEN BROUGHT STARS ACROSS THE GLOBE

Over the weekend, from Seoul to New York, this year’s Global Citizen Live urged everyone across the globe to take action in defending the planet, demanding equity, and defeating poverty. The annual event is hosted by the staunch advocacy organization, with a mission to end extreme poverty by 2030. The 24-hour show aimed to raise awareness on hunger, climate change, and vaccine equality.

The show kickstarted with the recorded performance of global pop icon BTS, hit song Permission to Dance. In between speeches and star-studded performances, the event urged audiences around the world to help raise $6 billion for the World Food Programme. They also discussed vaccine inequality. Ahead of the UN COP26 climate change conference in November, Global Citizen Live also encourages to create more pressure on world leaders to address climate crisis.

Since 2021, Global Citizen Live has brought together artists, music legends, activists, and famous personalities to speak about the global challenges we face. With the COVID-19 pandemic still causing major struggles, especially in less developed countries, the eponymous advocacy organization targets rich countries to deliver two billion vaccines to countries lacking resources, as well as meals for 41 million on the brink of starvation.

Defeat Poverty

The organization stated that almost 36% of the world’s population lives in extreme poverty. Co-Founder and CEO of Global Citizen Hugh Evans noted that “Charity alone… will never be sufficient to end extreme poverty or tackle climate change,” he said. “The actions of a movement of people are needed to drive lasting change.”

Defend the Planet

During the event, rapper Lizzo said, “They want me to talk to y’all about climate change. But I feel like I don’t have to talk to you. We can see it.” Global Citizen emphasizes how the less developed countries contribute the least. But they suffer the most from the climate crisis. Floods and droughts continue to challenge the poorest.

Demand Equity

Highlighting the need for equity, Global Citizen demands to protect and provide access to basic human rights for vulnerable sectors. These include people of colour, disabilities, and those who identify as LGBTQIA+.

Some of the notable performances of the night were from Lizzo, Elton John, Coldplay, Jennifer Lopez, Demi Lovato, Stevie Wonder, Camilla Cabello, Shawn Mendes, Billie Eilish, Paul Simon, and a lot more.
