DPWH STARTS DAGAMI, LEYTE FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT

With efforts to alleviate flooding in low-lying areas nationwide, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) began constructing a flood control structure along the Binahaan River in the municipality of Dagami, Leyte.

DPWH Secretary Roger Mercado said that the project, as reported by DPWH Region 8 Director Allan Borromeo, involves five-meter tall gabion walls measuring 350 lineal meters downstream and 366 lineal meters upstream of Binahaan River.

“The gabion walls and drainage system will prevent overflow from entering residential areas.”

“The gabion walls and drainage system will prevent overflow from entering residential areas, help reduce erosion and scouring on river banks due to high-velocity river streams, and avoid further damage to water-logged areas,” Borromeo explained.

With a total allocation of P98 million from the 2022 General Appropriations Act, the structures will be constructed within the stretch of Binahaan River to serve as protection for residents of Barangay Balilit and other nearby communities.

“The flood walls are placed to prevent possible loss of lives and destruction to properties.”

“Aside from ensuring the stability of terrain along the riverbanks, the flood walls are placed to prevent possible loss of lives and destruction to properties, especially in the occurrence of flash floods,” he added.
