DPWH HIKES CAPACITY OF LUNETA PUMPING STATION

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) completed projects that would increase the capacity of Luneta Pumping Station and mitigate flooding within the vicinity of Manila City Hall, including the surrounding flood-prone roads of Ermita, Manila.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH National Capital Region Loreta Malaluan, said that two contract packages for the rehabilitation of Luneta Pumping Station, located along Katigbak Parkway were recently implemented.

Completed are Phases 1 and 2 of the Luneta Pumping Station Rehabilitation costing P188.77 million which covered the installation of new submersible axial and mixed flow sewage pump with capacity of 1 cubic meter per second, a 33 percent increase from the previous station that pumps 0.75 cubic meter per second.

The project also includes the installation of submersible sump pump with generator sets and automatic trash rake, hoist crane, hydraulic gate, horizontal conveyor, as well as construction of bigger drainage in the area.

“With the new and improved pumps and drainage capacity, flooding will quickly recede in Manila City Hall, Bonifacio Drive, Katigbak Parkway, New Luneta Street, South Boulevard and Padre Burgos Street.”

“With the new and improved pumps and drainage capacity, the Luneta Pumping Station will be able to effectively discharge more flood water from our roads to Manila Bay, hence quickly recede flooding in the surrounding areas including Manila City Hall, Bonifacio Drive, Katigbak Parkway, New Luneta Street, South Boulevard and Padre Burgos Street,” Bonoan explained.

The DPWH South Manila District Engineering Office under the leadership of District Engineer Manny Bulusan carried out the 7-month rehabilitation of Luneta Pumping Station from February to September 2024.
