Fisher folks and residents of a coastal community in Maasin City, Southern Leyte are now protected from strong waves with a shoreline structure completed by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
Based on a report submitted by DPWH Region 8 Director Edgar Tabacon to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, the project involves the construction of a total of 915 linear meters of flood mitigation structure at Barangay Canturing composed of revetment on steel sheet pile foundation and installation of 831.6 linear meters of tetrapods which serves as a shoreline protection structure in Barangay Asuncion.
“With these shore protection projects, fishermen living in Barangay Asuncion and Barangay Canturing can safely dock their boats along the shoreline, even during storms.”
“With these shore protection projects, fishermen living in Barangay Asuncion and Barangay Canturing can safely dock their boats along the shoreline, even during storms, without the fear of being damaged by high waves,” Tabacon stressed.
Due to its geographical location, both Barangays in Maasin City have previously suffered from flooding in the occurrence of typhoons, which resulted in loss of lives and properties.
The multi-year project’s main objective is to prevent the displacement of families and extensive damage to vital infrastructure due to storm surge, similar to the destruction brought by Typhoon Odette in 2021 and Typhoon Agaton in 2022.
Implemented by DPWH Southern Leyte District Engineering Office, the entire project was accomplished under three (3) contract packages, with accumulated funds amounting to ₱170-million from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of the years 2021-2023.
