A newly-completed seawall project implemented by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) now prevents coastal flooding in the low-lying Barangay Santa Maria in Buguey, Cagayan.
In a report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Cagayan First District Engineer Oscar Gumiran said that the completed P19.7-million project funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA) is a 106-meter seawall built parallel to the shore of Barangay Santa Maria to serve as barrier against storm surges and high tides.
“The completed P19.7-million project is a 106-meter seawall built parallel to the shore of Barangay Santa Maria to serve as a barrier against storm surges and high tides.”
According to Gumiran, residents of the coastal area are better protected during typhoons, while critical infrastructure, including roads, utilities, and houses, are more resilient against coastal erosion and flooding.
Moreover, the project safeguards livelihoods, especially in the fisheries and tourism sectors, vital to the area’s economic growth.
“With the project’s completion, this coastal community is more prepared in case of extreme weather events, ensuring a safer and more prosperous future for its residents,” he added.
