The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the construction of a concrete revetment structure aimed at preventing the overflow of Silway River and flooding in Barangay Maligo, Polomolok, South Cotabato.
Spanning 370 meters, the flood control project involves the construction of a 5-meter-high revetment wall with embankment, the installation of steel pile foundations, grouted riprap, and concrete capping.
Intended to safeguard residents and their properties from volumes of flowing water from the nearby Mt. Matutum during heavy rains, the structure also prevents erosion and helps mitigate natural damage along the riverbanks.
Meanwhile, DPWH also constructed a solar-powered water system to address water scarcity and irrigation challenges in Barangay Apopong, General Santos City.
The project, consisting of a 200,000-cubic-meter water tank, solar panels, and a powerhouse that contains batteries and control systems to power water pumps and several communal faucets, now serves as a sustainable solution to the irrigation and water supply woes of farmers and an estimated 100 households in the area.
“With the completion of these projects, we hope to increase agricultural productivity, reduce flooding, and improve the overall well-being of locals in the rural areas of South Cotabato.”
