The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the rehabilitation of a flood control structure along the Digmala River in Bongabon, Nueva Ecija.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, citing reports from DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller Tolentino, said that the improvement of a 664.4-lineal meter flood control structure along Digmala River section protects onion-producing Barangay Tugatog, Bongabon, Nueva Ecija.
“The completion of the project ensures that farmlands in Bongabon town now have a first line of defense against unexpected flooding often caused by torrential rains and strong typhoons.”
According to Tolentino, the completion of the project ensures that farmlands in Bongabon town now have a first line of defense against unexpected flooding often caused by torrential rains and strong typhoons.
The improved flood control structure prevents the risk of having floodwaters inundating not only residential areas but also Bongabon’s 3,000 hectares of dedicated onion fields, earning the town the nickname “Onion Capital of the Philippines”.
DPWH Nueva Ecija Second District Engineering Office (DEO) implemented the P82-million project funded under the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2022.
