Residents of Barangay San Juan in Quirino, Isabela, can now feel more secure with the completion of a river flood control project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), aimed at safeguarding the community from recurring flooding.
DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, in a report from DPWH Region II Director Reynaldo Alconcel, said that the completed project is part of the larger Mallig River Flood Control initiative, which includes 300.8 lineal meters of slope protection and a 60-lineal-meter canal, to mitigate flooding, prevent soil erosion along the riverbanks, and improve drainage in the area.
For many years, residents, particularly farmers, have dealt with severe flooding during the rainy season.
The Mallig River, a tributary of the Cagayan River, often overflows and damages crops, leading to significant losses for the local agricultural sector.
“With the completion of this project, hundreds of farmers in Barangay San Juan can now secure their crops from damage caused by seasonal floods.”
The construction of the Mallig River Flood Control Project is designed to address these problems, providing much-needed protection to the community and their livelihoods.
“With the completion of this project, hundreds of farmers in Barangay San Juan can now secure their crops from damage caused by seasonal floods,” Bonoan added.
The flood mitigation project is anticipated to boost economic activity by safeguarding agricultural lands, preventing crop destruction, and providing crucial protection for lives and properties during extreme weather events.
Implemented by the DPWH Isabela Second District Engineering Office, the Mallig River Flood Control Project- San Juan, Quirino section was completed in the amount of P96.4 million, funded under the FY 2024 DPWH Regular Infrastructure Program.
