A 125-meter flood mitigation structure was built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to protect the coastal communities in Barangay Cabaruan, Sto. Tomas, La Union.
The flood protection project implemented by DPWH La Union 2nd District Engineering Office minimizes destructive effects, such as shoreline erosion and strong flow of offshore current and wave patterns.
DPWH Region I Director Ronnel Tan, in an update to Secretary Manuel Bonoan, said that the completed project includes a drainage system that will alleviate flooding in the coastal area.
“Before the enhancement of the shoreline, the community experienced massive flooding during strong rains and inclement weather.”
“It is reported that before the enhancement of the shoreline, the community experienced massive flooding during strong rains and inclement weather—minimizing their access to essential public services,” Tan said.
Funded under the General Appropriations Act of 2023 (GAA), the project, which costs P48.75 million now benefits coastal communities in Barangay Cabaruan.
