The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has constructed a new flood control structure along the Peñaranda River to safeguard nearby residential and agricultural communities in San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija.

Citing a report from DPWH Regional Office 3 Director Roseller Tolentino, DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan said that a newly-built 378-lineal-meter river wall now ensures the safety of residents in Barangay San Roque.

“A newly-built 378-lineal-meter river wall now ensures the safety of residents in Barangay San Roque.”

The flood control structure costing P63 million sourced from the General Appropriations Act (GAA) of 2022 was implemented by the DPWH Nueva Ecija Second District Engineering Office (DEO).

The DPWH Nueva Ecija Second DEO puts great importance in implementing projects that will alleviate flooding especially in food production areas in the province of Nueva Ecija which is recognized as the “Rice Granary of the Philippines”.

“Aside from protecting lives and properties of residents, the new flood control structure also prevents crop losses by protecting agricultural lands from the adverse effects of inland flooding,” said DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan.
