The low-lying communities of Barangay Balinsasayao in Abuyog and Barangay San Isidro in Baybay, Province of Leyte are now protected from flooding with the completion of two flood control structures by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
In his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Leyte 5th District Engineer Eusebio Culas said that the projects were implemented to mitigate the devastating effects of flooding and soil erosion to people, their households, and the surrounding farmlands.
“The projects were implemented to mitigate the devastating effects of flooding and soil erosion to people, their households, and the surrounding farmlands.”
The P52.5-million flood control structure in Balinsasayao, Abuyog measures 5.8 meters in height and a total length of 410 lineal meters while the 47-lineal meter river wall in Barangay San Isidro was constructed with a total amount of P5.8 million.
Funded under the 2023 Regular Infrastructure Program, the projects involve the provision of detours and traffic management during the construction phase, safety equipment for deployed personnel, structure excavation, construction of slope protection, embankment, and stone masonry.
“These projects are part of the agency’s efforts to ensure that locals will no longer be displaced in the occurrence of heavy rains and bring about opportunities for flood-safe communities to thrive,” Culas explained.
