DPWH FAST-TRACKS LEYTE RIVER FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is undertaking the construction of a flood mitigation structure along the Labiranan River in Barangay San Jose, Dulag, Leyte.

According to DPWH Region 8 Director Edgar Tabacon, the project is now 66 percent complete and is being implemented by DPWH Leyte 2nd District Engineering Office to alleviate potential flood risks and secure the riverside community.

“The river, during the occurrence of typhoons and heavy rains, is one of the primary causes of flooding in the area.”

In his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, Tabacon explained that the river, during the occurrence of typhoons and heavy rains, is one of the primary causes of flooding in the area.

Costing ₱76.8 million, the ongoing project which is presently ahead of schedule, involves the construction of riverbank protection retaining wall measuring 80 meters downstream and 254 meters upstream, drainage systems, grouted riprap, and rock embankment.

When completed, the project is expected to help the community withstand damaging effects of flooding to properties and livelihood and prevent significant loss of lives.
