DPWH COMPLETES CAGAYAN FLOOD CONTROL PROJECT REHAB

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed the rehabilitation of flood control structures along a portion of Abulug River to address the persistent flooding in Barangay Dugo in the municipality of Abulug, Cagayan, one of the most flood-prone areas in the Cagayan Valley Region.

DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, citing a report from DPWH Region II OIC-Director Mathias Malenab, said that the rehabilitation of the flood control structure was funded under the 2024 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a contract amount of P72.3 million.

DPWH constructed a reinforced concrete revetment spanning a net length of 190 meters, fortified with board piles, Z-type sheet piles, and hexapod blocks to form a spur dike.

“These structural enhancements were designed to mitigate the impact of river swelling and erosion, threatening residential houses, farmlands, and nearby roads,” Malenab explained.

“The Dugo flood control structure not only secures the community’s safety but also aids local farmers by safeguarding agricultural lands vital to their livelihood.”

Implemented by the DPWH Cagayan 2nd District Engineering Office, the newly rehabilitated flood control structure along the Abulug River in Abulug, Cagayan is expected to provide long-term benefits, ensuring the resilience of adjacent areas against extreme weather conditions.
