In celebration of the World Car-Free Day, the Department of Education (DepEd) backed the Department of Transportation’s (DOTr) initiatives of providing more inclusive transportation options for students, teaching and non-teaching personnel.
The activity highlighted the theme “Paving Safe Pathways to Schools,” which aims to promote road safety as well as sustainable and inclusive mobility solutions following the return to full face-to-face classes.
“Drivers need to understand that the road is not just for cars, but the roads are also for pedestrians and cyclists,” Undersecretary for Administration Kristian Ablan said.
Ablan likewise stressed DepEd’s support to schools that have encouraged the use of cycling as the primary mode of transportation earlier on.
“We hope whatever support the Central Office can give, these schools will support active transport and inclusive mobility.”

Meanwhile, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto commended DepEd for its installation of end-of-trip facilities like bike racks in schools and workplaces.

The World Car-Free Day event also provided free basic bike repairs and maintenance and bike lessons as a way to encourage commuters to be less dependent on their cars and try alternative ways of transport to reduce vehicle emissions and avoid other negative environmental impacts.
Additionally, a total of 30 bicycles, along with helmets and bike accessories, were distributed to students, teachers, and school staff of Rizal High School during the second part of the event. A bike clinic was likewise held on the campus.
Representatives from the DOTr, Department of Health (DOH), Pasig Transport, Move as One Coalition, CycleHouse, Decathlon, Bikers United Philippines, and other NGOs also attended the celebration.
