In the wake of a recent World Bank report with damning statistics about the country’s state of education, the Philippine Educators Alliance for Community Empowerment Party-list (PEACE) is urging the government to declare a state of emergency in education.
PEACE party list is also urging Congress to immediately pass a pending bill that would convene an education commission.
Abante said that with the budget season drawing to a close, with the Senate targeting approval of the 2022 General Appropriations Bill by next week, education should be the next top agenda that should be tackled.
“The recent World Bank report on the state of Philippine education should really jolt us into action. Any delays on our part will only lead to an exacerbation of our already dire situation. Kumilos na po tayo,” PEACE party list first nominee and president, Marie Paz T. Abante, said.
The said World Bank study showed that most kids aged 10 in the country cannot read.
The World Bank also noted that school children in the Philippines struggled to cope with the demands of studying remotely due to the pandemic, pushing learning poverty to a new high of 90 percent in 2020.

The House of Representatives already approved last week on third reading House Bill 10308, which seeks to form a Congressional oversight committee to review, assess, and recommend courses of action to agencies such as the Department of Education and the Commission on Higher Education for three years to address the education crisis.
“We need a roadmap as soon as possible. Huwag sana natin patapusin ang taon na hindi pa pinaguusapan nang masinsinan at pinagpaplanuhan kung anong gagawin.”
The Senate has yet to pass its counterpart bill.
“We need a roadmap as soon as possible. Huwag sana natin patapusin ang taon na hindi pa pinaguusapan nang masinsinan at pinagpaplanuhan kung anong gagawin,” Abante, a long-time educator, said.
