As the country commemorates Filipino Food Month this April, Union of Local Authorities of the Philippines president and Quirino Governor Dax Cua urged his fellow local leaders to create opportunities to showcase food in their localities.
“Filipino Food Month is an opportunity for us to highlight our local food and the role of agriculture in bringing food to our table. Let’s create opportunities not only for tourists, but also for the people in our own communities to learn more about our heritage through food,” Cua said.
Cua emphasized the importance of increasing people’s knowledge on local and indigenous food practices and ingredients.
The month of April was declared as Filipino Food Month or Buwan ng Kalutong Filipino in 2018 by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 469.
“Our identity is closely related to food—through it we become aware of our history and values as a people,” said the governor.
He also lauded the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), the Departments of Agriculture (DA) and Tourism (DoT), and the Philippine Culinary Heritage Movement (PCHM) for their efforts to increase the public’s awareness of Filipino food through various activities.
“We need more partnerships between the government and private sector so that more people become aware of the state of Filipino food,” said Cua.
“Hopefully, majority if not all local governments will follow suit. Itanghal natin ang mga pagkain, recipe, prutas at gulay, atbp. na nanganganib na maglaho dahil wala nang access sa mga ito,” he added.
Cua also expressed hope that eventually, food products from other provinces will be more easily accessed across the country.
