Everyone with access to the internet knows about Google. With its mission “to organize the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful,” Google has taken the internet by storm. Its innovations transcend its original service, which is the Google website, to their own applications and even their own devices.
Inception and History
Larry Page and Sergey Brin, two Stanford doctoral students, wanted to devise a way to improve how searches are approached and made. They sought a method that analyzes relations between websites, rather than counting the instances of this search phrase on the page. Called PageRank, it determined the importance of sites and ranked them on the search page based on their relevance.
What exactly is “Google”?
The word Google was an accident. The creators originally thought that it was how googol was spelt. A googol is what we call the number 1 followed by a hundred zeros. They picked this name to signify that a huge amount of information was to be provided by the search engine.
Google and the internet age
Google has solidified its integration into our lives. It’s the most popular search engine, and one of the most important players in marketing and accessibility. The rise of the internet age has caused us to transition online, with a more rapid pace in the past year due to COVID. This made cloud-based systems more beneficial because it allows easier collaboration done remotely. It is also important to understand how search engines acquire and disseminate data that are available around the world.
Where do we go from here?
A company explored many possible changes to see from Google within the next 10 years. This includes every search result being completely customized and personalized to you. Google already has access to a lot of the things we do on their platforms. These might extend the personalization options to the max. They believe that Google can only improve in determining exactly which scenario you are in at any moment and then offer you search results, maybe even before you search.
