BASILAN’S MALAMAWI BEACH ACCESS ROAD GETS UPGRADE

A concrete paving project by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is ongoing on a 5.4-lane kilometer access road leading to Malamawi White Beach in Isabela City, Basilan.

In his report to Secretary Manuel Bonoan and Undersecretary for Regional Operations in Mindanao Eugenio R. Pipo, Jr., DPWH Region 9 Director Cayamombao Dia said that the road paving project in convergence with the Department of Tourism, with an allocation of P108.9 million.

According to Dia, the road leading to the island is rough and unpaved, making it difficult for both locals and visitors to travel to the area.

“The white beach in Malamawi is one of the best in Basilan.”

“The white beach in Malamawi is one of the best in Basilan, hence, improving access to this pristine destination is expected to improve economic growth and further boost tourism in the province,” the director added.

When completed, the road project will also create income-generating livelihood opportunities for locals as it better connects barangays Lukbuton and Panigayan.

The project, implemented by DPWH Isabela City District Engineering Office involves the construction of unreinforced portland concrete cement pavement with pipe culvert, grouted riprap, and stone masonry.
