With just over 1,000 active COVID-19 cases in the 1st District of Quezon City (QCD1) and cases of the disease rising all over Metro Manila, QCD1 congressional candidate Arjo Atayde on Thursday urged his district-mates to register for their COVID-19 booster shots to obtain an added layer of protection against the more infectious Omicron variant.
“Nakakabahala po talaga itong bagong variant ng COVID. Nakita natin na from 200-plus new cases a day sa buong bansa, biglang sumipa ng more than 5,000 new cases per day, at ngayon nasa 10,000-plus na,” said Atayde.
In QCD1, the number of active cases has increased from 788 on January 4 to 1,172 on January 5. There are a total of 5,607 active cases in QC as of Wednesday.
“Ini-expect talaga ng experts na tataas pa ang bilang ng kaso kasi matindi talaga itong Omicron variant; it is four times more contagious than Delta.”

According to Atayde, while informal surveys of the district reveal that an estimated 90% of QCD1 residents are vaccinated, scientists have pointed out that a booster shot increases one’s protection against the extremely contagious Omicron variant.
“Since nagsimula tayo mag-ikot, tinatanong po natin kung marami na ang nagpabakuna, at mabuti naman at marami nang vaccinated dahil napatunayan na kapag bakunado ka, hindi magiging malala ang symptoms mo kung mahawa ka ng COVID,” explained Atayde, who contracted the disease last August and experienced mild symptoms.
The actor, who donated service vehicles to QC barangays to aid in COVID response efforts, pointed out that QCD1 residents can register for booster shots three months after their second dose, or two months after receiving their Janssen dose.
“The DOH has already reduced the waiting period to get a booster, and the QC local government––under the able leadership of Mayor Joy Belmonte––has enough vaccine supplies for the city, so I really encourage everyone in the district to get their booster shots to protect themselves and their families.”
