A new flood control structure aimed to protect residents and local weavers from an overflow of the Abra River during the rainy season has been completed in La Paz, Abra by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).
DPWH Secretary Mark Villar announced that the Bulbulala Flood Control Project is now ready to function as a flood barrier in Barangay Bulbulala.
The 398-meter revetment wall made of steel sheet piles was built along the riverbank under the 2019 General Appropriations Act (GAA) with a total cost of P47 million.
“I commend DPWH Abra for the on-time completion of the project.”
Villar commended DPWH Abra District Engineering Office for the on-time completion of the project with only four months of construction from August 2019 to January 2020.
“The newly-completed river dike is just one of the infrastructure projects in La Paz aimed to open opportunities for economic development for the traditional loom weaving industry,” the public works chief said.
La Paz, particularly Barangay Bulbulala, is known for producing traditional woven fabrics known as Abel, which are hand-made by local weavers.
