Every year on the 3rd of December, the United Nations General Assembly commemorates the International Day of Persons with Disabilities (IDPD). For its 30th anniversary, the theme of this year is “𝙏𝙧𝙖𝙣𝙨𝙛𝙤𝙧𝙢𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙨𝙤𝙡𝙪𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙨 𝙛𝙤𝙧 𝙞𝙣𝙘𝙡𝙪𝙨𝙞𝙫𝙚 𝙙𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙡𝙤𝙥𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩: 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙞𝙣𝙣𝙤𝙫𝙖𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣 𝙞𝙣 𝙛𝙪𝙚𝙡𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣 𝙖𝙘𝙘𝙚𝙨𝙨𝙞𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙚𝙦𝙪𝙞𝙩𝙖𝙗𝙡𝙚 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙡𝙙,” which seeks to increase awareness of disability issues and to advocate for the rights, dignity, and overall well-being of people with disabilities. During this festive season, let us remember to spread the joy of Christmas with everyone, with or without disabilities, and continue striving for equal rights and opportunities for all.

The De La Salle University – Dasmariñas Junior Marketing Association (DLSU-D JMA) will be spreading Christmas cheer with their first outreach event entitled 𝑲𝒂𝒑𝒘𝒂: 𝑨 𝑮𝒍𝒊𝒎𝒑𝒔𝒆 𝒐𝒏 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑳𝒊𝒇𝒆 𝒐𝒇 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑩𝒍𝒊𝒏𝒅 𝒂𝒏𝒅 𝒕𝒉𝒆 𝑫𝒆𝒂𝒇 to commemorate Persons with Disabilities (PWD) day. The organization hopes to spread the message of inclusion this Christmas and beyond. This event will be a great way to learn how to communicate with PWDs through understanding public braille and learning sign languages.

As we enter this month of giving, it is also the perfect time to bring joy and hope to the lives of people with disabilities through braille and sign language. Braille is a raised-dot writing system and a tactile code tool that enables visually impaired people to express their thoughts and helps persons with a disability to read and write by touching the dots.

Aside from braille, sign language is an effective way to express our feelings to the Deaf community, and knowing how to use it will help us communicate with them smoothly. Learning how to use sign language also has a wide variety of benefits that will help not only the deaf but also those who have different disabilities, such as those who can hear and see but cannot speak.

During this festive season, let us do our part to spread the holiday cheer to the PWD community by normalizing the use of public braille and give those who have mutism the opportunity to express their thoughts and feelings freely and experience the joy of Christmas to make them feel loved and special this December.

‘Tis the season for us to wake up to the spirit of acceptance and equality. Join us in our festive outreach event and get a fresh perspective on the world where everyone is welcomed with open arms.
