DWPH FINISHES NORTHERN SAMAR STEEL BRIDGE

As part of the Build Better More initiative under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and in line with the vision of a Bagong Pilipinas, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) successfully completed the construction of a new steel bridge in Barangay Central Poblacion, Gamay, Northern Samar.

This new bridge, designed for pedestrians and single motorcycles, replaces the old and deteriorating wooden footbridge previously used by local residents.

In his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, DPWH Region 8 Director Edgar Tabacon highlighted the bridge’s importance, emphasizing how it improves the safety and convenience of daily travel for residents.

“This sturdier bridge allows safer passage across Gamay River, replacing the slippery timber footbridge that posed significant risks, particularly during adverse weather conditions.”

The P12.83-million project is a critical piece of infrastructure, providing a safer and more efficient route to local facilities such as the market, schools, and other essential services.

The project has been met with gratitude from residents, especially students, who now benefit from a safer, shorter route to school, even during the rainy season when the old bridge was unsafe to cross.

Implemented by the DPWH Northern Samar 2nd District Engineering Office, the 91.7-lineal-meter steel bridge was completed in January 2025.
