DA GIVES SURIGAO CITY SWINE FATTENING FACILITY

The Department of Agriculture (DA) officially handed over a ₱10 million Biosecure Swine Fattening Facility to the City Government of Surigao. 

The project is part of the DA’s Integrated National Swine Production Initiative for Recovery and Expansion (INSPIRE) program.

It aims to boost swine industry recovery while supporting food security and sustainable agriculture.

The facility, located in Brgy. Mat-i, will be managed by the Mat-i Farmers Association (MAFA) under its president, Julito Comanda. 

It is designed with advanced biosecurity measures to house 300 swine.

It is designed with advanced biosecurity measures to house 300 swine, ensuring safe and efficient operations while minimizing the risk of diseases such as African Swine Fever (ASF).

The facility, which is air-conditioned to maintain optimal conditions, promotes the health and productivity of the swine, benefiting local farmers and ensuring a steady supply of pork for the community.

Surigao City Mayor Pablo Yves Dumlao II led the ceremonial turnover alongside DA Regional Director Arlan Mangelen, DA Senior Agriculturist and Livestock Focal Person Jekem Sanchez, Acting City Veterinarian Maridel Zerda, Acting City Engineer Engr. Genevieve Pontevedra, Liga ng mga Barangay President Florenillo Ravelo, and Brgy. Mat-i Captain Norberto Bruzon.

“This facility not only strengthens the livelihood of our farmers but also ensures that Surigao City continues to lead in sustainable agricultural practices,” Dumlao said.

The swine fattening facility is expected to serve as a model for modern livestock production, providing long-term benefits to the agricultural sector in Surigao City.
