The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has completed a dike project that now protects riverside communities from overflow and offers a recreational area for locals and tourists in Jordan, Guimaras.
Costing P72.3 million, the project spans 100 lineal meters with 585 lineal meters of pre-casted concrete piles, and 8.2 kilometers of steel sheet piles for slope protection. Solar lights were also installed for visibility at night.
“Due to their proximity to the Jordan River, residents of Barangay Poblacion often suffer from inconveniences brought by storm surge.”
DPWH Region 6 Director Sanny Boy Oropel said that due to their proximity to the Jordan River, residents of Barangay Poblacion often suffer from inconveniences brought by storm surge.
During heavy rains, nearby roads would also be submerged, making it difficult for motorists to travel along the area.
“The completion of this dike not only addresses flooding woes, but also prevents riverbank erosion and reduces the risk of road damage,” Oropel explained.
Aside from flood control measures, the project also features an esplanade which can be used for walking, jogging, cycling, and other healthy activities which is expected to draw more visitors in the area.
The river dike with esplanade project was implemented by DPWH Guimaras District Engineering Office.
