The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has recently constructed a seawall that also serves as a scenic alternative road in the coastal town proper of Barcelona, Sorsogon.
DPWH Regional Office 5 Director Virgilio Eduarte, in his report to DPWH Secretary Manuel Bonoan, said that with an allocation of P180 million from the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA), the DPWH under the Sustainable Infrastructure Projects Alleviating Gaps (SIPAG) Program, was able to successfully implement a 340-meter seawall and a 156-meter coastal road entrance and exit.

Built with two lanes of carriageway, as well as road shoulders on both sides and an elevated sidewalk, the Barcelona Coastal Road is expected to safely cater to the motorists, pedestrians, and bikers.
As an added road safety feature, the DPWH also installed solar-powered street lights to illuminate the road at night.
“The DPWH Regional Office completed the Barcelona Coastal Road Project in January 2024, which is five months ahead of schedule,” Eduarte concluded.
