Senator Bong Go highlighted the need to prioritize the security of Filipino citizens while also considering humanitarian considerations in regard to the United States’ request for the temporary shelter for Afghan refugees in the Philippines.
In an interview after aiding poor residents in Quezon City recently, Go, as a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations and Vice Chairman of the Senate Defense Committee, refrained from providing a definitive comment at the moment, stating that it is prudent to listen to the concerns of all relevant agencies involved.
The legislator, however, stressed the importance of carefully evaluating the potential impact on national security while also being able to help other nations in need of assistance as part of the international community.
“Kailangan pa nating mapakinggan lahat ng concerned agencies.”
“I am a member of the Senate Committee on Foreign Relations, it is not prudent on my part na magbigay muna ng komento sa ngayon dahil kailangan pa nating mapakinggan lahat ng concerned agencies,” the lawmaker said.
The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations has scheduled an immediate public hearing to discuss the request.
The committee’s notice states that the hearing, originally planned to be held in private, has been changed to a public hearing given the importance and pressing nature of the issue.

“As a vice chairman po ng Senate Defense Committee, it is my interest na anumang arrangement we will have, ‘di dapat malagay sa alanganin ang seguridad ng ating mga kababayan. Importante muna ngayon seguridad ng Pilipino,” the senator added.
National Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro revealed that the government is currently studying the issue, with the Department of Foreign Affairs taking the lead in discussions.
Former President Rodrigo Duterte, known for his strong stance on national security, advised President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to carefully consider and thoroughly analyze the implications before making a decision.
