PRESIDENT MARCOS URGED: PRESERVE ELECTRIC COOPS

The National Center of Concerned Electric Consumers (NCCECO) has urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to include the preservation of electric cooperatives (ECs) in the administration’s priority measures.

During its national convention, NCCECO adopted a resolution requesting the President “to include as a priority bill the preservation of ECs not just being the legacy of the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr. but also being the government’s partner in the successful implementation of Rural Electrification Program.”

The organization argued that if Congress passed a law for the preservation of Philippine carabaos, it should accord the same to electric co-ops, citing their contributions to rural economic development.

NCCECO was referring to the Philippine Carabao Act or Republic Act No. 7307 that was signed into law on March 27, 1992. It was authored by then Senator Joseph Estrada.

“Throughout the past several decades, the nation’s economic development and progress were made possible with the electric cooperatives’ significant contributions,” NCCECO National Chairman Edgardo Masongsong explained.

Meanwhile, NCCECO also passed two more resolutions during its national convention on Thursday (April 27), which was held at Park Inn by Radisson in Quezon City.

One resolution is in support of Senator Sherwin Gatchalian’s calling out the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) due to its failure to ensure affordable power rates for consumers.

The said resolution requests the ERC to provide the electricity consumers nationwide through NCCECO the list of 20 distribution utilities that operate without approved power supply agreements and charge generation rates beyond what is permitted.

The other resolution approved by NCCECO is that the electricity consumers in the country be represented in the National Electrification Administration (NEA) Board of Administrators.

With the theme “Empowering Communities through the NCCECO, an Electric Consumers Movement for Change,” the national convention gathered more than 200 leaders from NCCECO’s regional chapters across the country.
