Riverside communities in Palimbang and Esperanza, Sultan Kudarat are now better protected against flooding with the completion of two flood control structures by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

The completed projects identified by DPWH Region 12 Director Basir Ibrahim are the construction of a 400-meter riverbank protection structure in Barangay Baranayan, Municipality of Palimbang and the 140-meter riverwall in Barangay Ala, Municipality of Esperanza.

“We aim to safeguard low-lying communities from the damaging effects of floodwater and secure their sources of livelihood which revolve mainly on farming and fishing.”

“With these projects, we aim to safeguard low-lying communities from the damaging effects of floodwater and secure their sources of livelihood which revolve mainly on farming and fishing,” Ibrahim explained.

In addition to keeping floodwaters out of the surrounding farms and residential areas, these structures will prevent nearby road deterioration and soil collapse.

Other works involve a concrete pavement that acts as a service road for farmers, metal railings, solar lights, embankment, grouted riprap, and installation of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) pile foundations.

Implemented by Sultan Kudarat 2nd District Engineering Office, the flood control projects in Palimbang and Esperanza were funded from the General Appropriations Act of 2023 in the combined amount of ₱97.92 million.
